Chapter 8

"Ugh...Sonic...Where are we?" Tails groaned gripping his head. He took a small look around but he couldn't move much because his head was still throbbing. He just wanted to go home and crawl into his bed under his sheets. He groaned again in pain. Whatever that light was it was killing him.

“We are back on Earth Tails, everything is fine.” Sonic patted Tails head lightly then Sonic realised what Shadow said to him “Uh what… but we just got here.” Sonic sighed “Ok fine we will go back but first I’m going to make sure Tails is ok, do you mind if we leave him in your room to rest?” Shadow nodded to Sonic and the blue hedgehog went and held Tails in his arms bringing him into Shadow’s small but cozy house and made his way steadily up the stairs and into Shadow’s tidy room and placed Tails on Shadow’s bed to rest. “Now you stay here Tails and rest, is there anything I can get you? food? water?” Sonic knew that right now Shadow would not mind giving some of his food to Tails.

Tails shook his head which only earned him a bigger headache. "We should probably clean that wound," he heard Shadow say as he disappeared into another room. When he returned he was carrying a white box. He sat next to him and wiped at his forehead with something that burned. "Ouch that burns," Tails wailed. Tears welled up in his eyes as Shadow gently blew on the sting. Shadow then took a q-tip with some brown glop on it. After he applied it Tails didn't feel anything else. Shadow did something else to his head with some black string but he didn't feel it. "There now it should heal without infection and possibly without scars," Shadow smiled. Tails liked it when Shadow smiled. He didn't look so scary. "I'm sleepy," he yawned his eyes feeling heavy.

"Sleep," Shadow softly commanded as he tucked the little fox into his bed. Once he was asleep he turned to Sonic. "We need a plan. We can't just go back there all willy nilly. We'll be killed."

“Yeah you are right, and I think we all need to get better and heal up we all have some sort of wound that needs taking care off.” Sonic said referencing to Tails head wound, Shadow’s leg wound which seemed to be healing nicely and Sonic’s own head wound which luckily was not too bad. “I know going back to your planet fully heal with help with our mission. But I don’t think they will be trying to blow up Earth again for awhile, I’m sure we may have a few days to full prepare for our trip there” Sonic looked around his house “Mmm what do we need?… “ Sonic yawned and went down stairs to Shadow’s kitchen taking some food from the fridge and eating it, he had been hungry for awhile now. “Hey uh Shadow where do you keep the cat food, you cat is staring at me while sitting next to his bowl he’s probably hungry.”

Shadow chuckled. "I'm surprised he didn't try and follow me." He reached down and petted the small animal who responded with its own purr of delight. He reached into the cupboard and pulled out a can, quickly opening it and putting it in the food bowl. His own stomach growled. Perhaps it was high time he made something to eat. "I hope you eat more than just chili dogs," he joked as he moved about the kitchen preparing a meal.

“Uhh” Sonic hit the chili dog behind his back yet the chili was still clearly seen around his mouth. “I will make something else too heh.” Sonic quickly finished off his last chili dog in a few bites. Sometimes Sonic wondered if he could beat Eggman in a eating contest but something tolled him he would never get the chance to do that. “I’m pretty hungry, we have not really eaten much in the last few days. I’m going to make some pasta, assuming you have all the ingredients.” Sonic looked around and was able to find some pasta and sauce that could go with it. He got a pan filled with hot water from the kettle and started to boil the water waiting for the bubbles to come up so he could put the pasta in.“ Sonic looked over at Shadow cooking himself a meal. “What are you cooking?” Sonic said pouring the pasta into the bubbling water to cook.

"Well I was cooking a meal for the two of us but you seem to want my pasta," he chuckled as he put away the side he was going to make and just focused on the protein. "I think I'll make some chicken to add to that." He smiled. His head was clear and he was in complete control of his body. It felt great to be back home. Meeko rubbed his leg and gave a soft meow of welcome. He reached down and petted the fat cat who purred in response and went back to cooking. This was nice. Spending time with Sonic felt natural like it was always supposed to be this way. He smiled in spite of himself. He wanted more of this. "Hey Sonic? After this is all over, you wanna come back to my place and watch a movie or something?" Shadow wasn't too worried about saving the world. They've done it like a thousand times. He was more worried of Sonic's answer. While he was so determined to save him it still didn't mean Sonic was ready for something more. Look at Amy. He saved her countless times. That didn't mean he was going to date her....but he didn't kiss her either. Shadow's smile turned dreamy as he remembered that heartfelt kiss. Man, he wanted more of that.

Sonic’s ears twitches to his side where Shadow was his was daydreaming a bit but managed to hear what Shadow had asked him. “Oh right yes that sounds wonderful, we have never actually had a time to properly hang out have we? well at least without have the save the world like always” Sonic chuckled at the realisation. “Well I will gladly enjoy watching a movie with you after this whole saving the world issue is done and over with.” Sonic smiled while continuing with making the pasta, he suddenly felt something rub up against his leg he looked down and saw the little cat Meeko rubbing up against him with twinkles in his eyes. “What a cute cat!” Sonic said taking a small break from stirring the cooking pasta and rub the cat’s head while it purred in delight. Sonic looked back up to Shadow cooking and quickly went up hugging him from behind “but I think you might just be cuter.” he said nuzzling into Shadow neck.

Shadow blushed and stiffened as his crush just nuzzled his most sensitive sweet spot. He shuddered feeling Sonic's hot breath on his nape. He struggled to breathe normally. "Sonic.." He whimpered. It was supposed to be stern but it came out more as a plea. He rested against his chest and in his arms. He sighed and closed his eyes enjoying the feelings that Sonic brought out in him. He turned his head to look into those beautiful green eyes and leaned in for a kiss. He was just a breath away when the oil popped and hit Shadow's arm. "Ahh!" He yelled clutching his arm glaring at the hot oil. "I guess that's what I get for doing this in the kitchen. Perhaps we should finish cooking first..." He smiled sheepishly.

Sonic looked down at Shadow’s arm and nodded “Sorry I distracted you there a bit.” Sonic looked back to the pasta that was now finished cooking. “Yeah we should finish cooking first, this looks done already.” Sonic tried a bit of pasta to make sure it was soft enough then got rid of the water leaving nothing but the cooked pasta. “Is that chicken almost ready, Shadow?” Sonic questioned while giving Shadow a quick kiss to his cheek. “It looks and smells good I must say I had no idea you could cook.” Sonic said with a slight smug smile.

“Hey buddy, glad you are looking better and ready for dinner!” Sonic said a big smile on his face, Tails was now looking a lot better thanks to the fact that they helps his wounds and and that finally got some well deserved rest on Shadow’s comfy bed. Sonic took the sauce that we had warmed up and mixed it up with the pasta. “Mmm I love pasta, not the way I love Chili Dogs but I still love it.” Sonic could but help but lick his lips just thinking about chili dogs then then snapped back into reality and sat down on the small table that was able to fit the three of them. “How are you feeling Tails?” Sonic asked then started stuffing his face with pasta hungrily, he had not eaten any proper food for days and right now this was simply amazing.

Shadow had served everyone their helpings as Sonic tried to inhale his food. Tails  smiled and picked at his food delicately. "I'm feeling much better just a little headache." Shadow sat and ate his own food. "I'm glad my bed was to your liking." He said before he realised how wrong that sounded. Tails blushed. "Yes thank you. Its very comfy. Easy to get rest." Shadow enjoyed the peace he was feeling right now but he had this nagging feeling that it wouldn't last. It bothered him as he pushed the thought to the side. He focused on Sonic who by now had finished his food and was helping himself to a second serving. Man, that hedgehog could probably eat him out of house and home. Shadow chuckled to himself when he realised he didn't mind as much. He turned back to Tails who seemed to be on edge. He briefly wondered what was wrong. "Tails? Are you OK?" He asked softly. "Im fine." Tails said much too quickly. Was he hiding something?

Sonic looked like he should of been choking on his food when you saw quickly he was stuffing it in his mouth, but It seems Sonic was used to eating fast when he wanted to. It seemed Sonic was able to do a lot more things fast than it may seem, he was so content and happy with filling his stomach up that he almost completely got caught up in the whole moment. Luckily he did hear what the others said, Sonic tried to speak it his mouth full but then realised no one understand what he said and took a big gulp “Uh you sure you are ok Tails? you know you can tell me anything I’m always here for you. Is it something you would like to say to me in private or?…” Sonic said then ate the last bit of pasta in his bowl and got up to get a glass of water for himself and started to drink the cold liquid while sitting back down and looking over to Tails.

Tails shook his head. "No no. I'm fine. Probably just a little dizzy from my headache and lack of food," he chuckled and looked down at his plate as he had begun to eat. Shadow's hairs rose on the back of his neck.  Something was wrong but he wasn't sure what and really he had no proof other than a gut feeling. He smiled at Tails "well as long as you're alright," he said pretending to let the situation go. Tails seemed to visibly relax as he nodded. Yup he was hiding something alright. "Meeko," Shadow called and the cat came and jumped on to his lap. He nuzzled the cats ear and whispered something to him in a different language but it sounded as if was an endearment. Meeko rubbed his face against Shadow before padding off.

Sonic looked over to Shadow and noticed that now Shadow was looking a little uneasy, did he miss something when he was too busy eating? The blue hedgehog though to himself starting to now get a bit uneasy himself at the sudden change of mood in the room. Sonic realised that Shadow spoke a foreign language to his cat and he could not help but tilt his head and look at the cat in question. “Was that Black Arm language you spoke or?… do you know that language fluently, you learnt that quick.” Sonic suddenly felt a little worried thinking that maybe he was still under the control of the curse but he had to remind himself that they killed of Demon Shadow and destroyed the crown so everything should be fine, yet he was still worried for his little brother Tails he was acting a bit odd.

Shadow looked up at the question and grinned understanding the worried look. "No. That wasn't Black Arms it was German. Meeko was a German cat so he only understands commands in German. Although I now do know the Black Arms language fluently because of the whole body take over. Just one more language I now know." He laughed then. Meeko came back with Tails' PDA in his mouth and dropped in on the couch. Shadow walked over and slipped it into his quills to hold onto for a little while until he could look through it and find out why Tails is so antsy. "I'm tired." He yawned "Tails you can sleep in the guest room which is right next to the bathroom and Sonic...if you want you can stay with me." He blushed and looked away. It took all his courage to offer that but he really wanted to sleep next to Sonic...like back in the castle.

Sonic blushed madly his cheeks were hot red when he heard those words come out of Shadow’s mouth. “Uh oh yeah sure I can stay with you, in your bedroom.” Sonic had not even realised how quickly time had gone by, it was already dark outside and the stars and moon could be seen up above twinkling, a sight Shadow gazed upon a lot during his time on the Ark, Sonic assumed. “Yeah it’s pretty late and I know we all have to catch up on sleep right now, we should all go to bed now” Sonic said with a yawn and he started to make his way up stairs and made his way into Shadows room. He could not help but look at the room seeing a few pictures and several older objects that looked like Shadow must of brought to Earth from the Ark, along with some newer things. “I like your room Shadow.” Sonic said sitting down on the large bed in the middle of the room.

Shadow smiled at Tails and showed him to the guest room. He walked in after Sonic to hear him say he liked his room. "Thank you," he smiled as he closed the door softly behind him. He slipped onto the bed and sat next to Sonic. He bit his lip. He wanted him here and now, but now that he had him here he had no idea what to do. His face flushed red as all thoughts of what they COULD do in that bed flashed by. He was slowly losing his nerve to do anything.

Sonic stretched and yawned and carefully took off his gloves putt them to the side and then looked at Shadow who was looking incredibly red right now and he knew he had an idea of what the hedgehog must of been thinking at that moment. “Um it’s nice finally having some alone time together, you know without having to worry about anything.” Sonic said thinking that he should maybe say something to the blushing Shadow who was currently looking a bit nervous. Sonic started to snuggled up Shadow. “Mmm this is really nice.” Sonic loved this moment so much, being this close to him in bed, it was wonderful.

Shadow sighed happily as he just laid in Sonic's arms. This was right. He suddenly felt very sleepy. He yawned and relaxed and everything turned black. When he opened his eyes the rays of sunlight was trying its best to pour through the curtains. He fell asleep? He tried to sit up but something held him in place and pulled him closer. He turned his head and saw blue hair and remembered. Sonic saving him, bringing him home, and sleeping in his bed. He smiled. This was perfect. He almost didn't want to go back...but he knew Had had too. In all seriousness he was their king. If he just got rid of Doom's Eye then he could change his people's way of thinking. The only question was how?

Sonic could feel something soft that he was cuddling, he was waking up but he did not want to he was so comfy at that moment, he did not even bother opening his eyes. Gosh this is one comfy bed he thought to himself and this thing he was holding onto was so nice too. He without thinking held it closer to himself but could suddenly feel it more a bit, confused he slowly opened his eyes and saw perfect black and red quills and fur. Oh did he sleep with his secret Shadow plushie again? Oh hang on his Shadow plushie was not this big, or this soft and adorable. Then all the memories hit him like lightening, that’s right, this was the real Shadow he was sleeping with. He breathed in Shadow’s wonderful scent and wanted to continue sleeping but he could him moving again, maybe he was awake. “Shadow?…” Sonic whispered hoping he was still asleep so he would not have to let go of him yet.

"Hmm?" He murmured. His thoughts were still on making plans on how to over throw Doom's Eye. He just snuggled into the crook of Sonic's arm getting more comfortable. In all seriousness he really didn't want to move. He wanted to just stay here forever. But forever really wouldn't last If the Black Arms destroyed everything. He sighed. He would have to move sometime. "How'd you sleep?" He whispered not really moving.

“I think that may have been the most comfortable sleep I have ever had, at least from what I remember.” Sonic cuddled into him closer and yawned loudly. “I really don’t want to move, Shadow I’m so comfy right now, you’re so warm too. I love this so much, just being with you I want to do this all nights, I don’t know if I have ever been this happy just laying in bed.” Sonic said just speaking his mind at the moment feeling so content and relaxed with himself, his eyes started to close again and he could almost feel himself started to fall asleep again.

Shadow snuggled further allowing Sonic to go back to sleep. However his mind wouldn't stop thinking. He clicked his tongue which was usually a sign for his cat. Meeko trotted into the room still carrying Tails' PDA. The reason Shadow wanted it was because Tails left the thing always recording just in case. It was smart. This way he could find out what happened. The fact that Tails hasn't gone crazy looking for it yet was suspicious to Shadow. He just hoped there wasn't a lock on it or something. He was delightfully surprised to find that it wasn't. He went straight to the camera and rewinded to a part where Tails was alone in his bedroom. He watched him toss and turn until he finally woke up frustrated. What he saw next shocked Shadow.

Tails' form shifted and changed. It was a Black Arms solider. He watched him change back quickly as Meeko pushed the door open. He stared at the cat before shooing him away. He took out a device and spoke to someone through it. It was in Black Arms obviously. Shadow could barely translate because the volume he was speaking was so low. But he made out the words information Shadow and kill. So they were planning on gaining info and killing him. If this isn't Tails then that meant..  "Oh no." He moved out of Sonic's arms and gently shook him awake. Glancing at the door to make sure it was still closed he whispered "Sonic, wake up. We don't have Tails."

Shadow sudden movement surprised Sonic and when he started to gently shake him he opened up his eyes to hear him say that Tails was not with them. Sonic rubbed his eyes “Uh? what do you mean did he leave the house where is he?” Sonic questioned not really knowing what was happening but being that sleepy and only having just recently woke up did not help. “Wrong wrong Shadow you look worried.” Sonic suddenly started to feel nervous seeing how his darling Shadow had so suddenly reacted like that out of no where.

Shadow kept his eyes on the door as he lowered his mouth to Sonic's ear. "Hush love. We mustn't let him hear us. Tails is still back on my home planet. The one we brought with us is a spy." He whispered as he handed over the PDA. "Watch and see for yourself." He replayed the recording showing all that Shadow saw. "They must have followed you and when you came to save me must have been when they were switched. Tails is still alive but for how long I am uncertain." He glanced worriedly at Sonic. "We must find out all he knows."

Watching that video along with all this sudden news of his little brother Tails made Sonic feel like he was almost about to have a panic attack. He left his own younger brother on an alien planet that basically tried to kill them the whole time they were there alone. Sonic knew panicking was not going to help and knew he just had to go back straight away to save Tails, he barely cared there was a spy in the house that was getting information off them he just wanted his brother back who knew what they could be doing to him at that very second. “Oh god Shadow we have to get back to your planet now, do you have your chaos emeralds with you? and what are we going to do with the spy, oh hang on he knows where Tails is, maybe he can get some information off him somehow.” Sonic got out of bed, quickly putting his gloves back on. “Should we confront the spy, say we know he’s not Tails? Or do we attack? we don’t know how dangerous this spy could be, Shadow”

Shadow slowly crawled off the bed and put his ear to the door and locked it. He could hear snoring coming from the other room. "He's asleep so it seems his guard is down. But I don't believe Doom's Eye would send a moron after us.  Unless he underestimated us." Shadow shook his head "No its better to overestimate what that spy could do and your right. He probably does know where Tails is being held." Shadow's eyes held a hard glint as he resolved himself what to do. "Sonic...perhaps you should stay here while I interrogate him." Shadow knew they would probably need force to glean any information and Sonic probably would be able to stand there and watch while the spy had on Tails' face.

Sonic breathed in and out slowly while looking at Shadow before him, Sonic was always good at keeping his cool but knowing what trouble his younger brother was in suddenly made it hard for the blue hedgehog to keep his known cool and cockiness. “Ok, you go in there and do whatever you have to do to get information out of him about Tails.” Sonic said surprisingly calmly considering how worried he was. “Try not to be too long if you can, I don’t know how long we stay here before something might happen to Tails.” Sonic said in a whisper not wanting to possibly wake up the spy who could possibly hear them talking outside the room.

Shadow nodded and went into his closet and pulled out some things. A burlap sack, some rope, a bottle of liquid, some cloth and a very sharp menacing looking nice before he left the room. As he snuck into the guest bedroom he applied the liquid to the cloth and quickly put it over the spy's face. He wriggled and tried to scream but soon he was unconscious. Shadow put the burlap sack over his head and tied him up with the rope. He carried him out to his shed which was sound proof so that he could use all his power tools without bothering his neighbours. He needed to do this quickly. He heard Sonic following even though he pretty much said he wouldn't. He was as anxious as Sonic was for the info. He swallowed and resolved what he needed. He covered the single window with the thick curtain and began his interrogation once the culprit woke up. For every lie he told Shadow delivered pain until about four hours in he finally caved. Shadow got all the info he needed and left the spy on the floor bloody. Somehow he managed to retain a bit of Tails' shape from the back. Shadow opened the door pulling on his gloves when he looked up and saw Sonic standing there. He tried to shield him from seeing most of it but by the look in Sonic's eyes showed Shadow he didn't move fast enough. He closed the door with a click. "Sonic...no matter what he looks like he not him. He's not Tails.”

Sonic’s face went pale and he felt faint he almost forgot that who he saw beaten up, almost dead was not his brother but he could not help but have trouble shaking off that imagine in his head of the spy who looked just liked Tails. Sonic down on the floor where he was standing feeling faint and stared back at Shadow. “W-what did the spy say?… do you know if the real Tails is ok?” Sonic stuttered saying trying forget what he saw and distracted himself by talking to the blood covered hedgehog before him. At first glance it would seem that Shadow must of been bleeding but Sonic knew that was not his blood. Sonic decided to get up and make his way into the kitchen with Shadow following shortly behind. To try and calm his nerves he started to make a cup of tea for himself, they always helped calmed him down when he needed to.

Shadow followed Sonic closely but silently. He watched Sonic's moves to make sure he didn't faint. Sonic made tea with shakey hands. Shadow cupped Sonic's hand in his. "Sonic...everything is going to be alright." He gazed into the scared emeralds and kinda willed him to be calm. It seemed to be working a bit as his eyes became more focused. "I know where Tails is and we don't have much time. If the spy doesn't check with them in two days they'll kill Tails. Make your tea. I'm going upstairs to pack. We know what we're up against and we know what we need."

Sonic sat silently in the kitchen finishing off his hot cup of tea. They finally knew that at least for now Tails was alright, but not for long and they had to act fast. Sonic patiently waiting for Shadow to finish packing up all the things they need for their rescue, after a few minutes he had finished his tea so he got up and put it in the sink. The blue hedgehog then noticed the small cat looking up at him with his big eyes, when they made eye contact the cat meowed. Sonic then noticed the bowl was empty and that the cat must of been hungry, he looked around the kitchen trying to remember where the food was. He eventually found the cats biscuits. He poured the food into the small red bowl on the kitchen floor that was near the back entrance and watched the cat happily eat the food and every once in awhile stopped to lick his whiskers. Sonic’s ears twitched and he heard Shadow making his way into the kitchen.

Shadow pulled a small panel on the wall and the wall turned revealing a hall of weaponry. He trailed through his hall of guns and took everything he thought he would need.  After packing he went downstairs and saw Sonic watching Meeko eat. He didn't turn to him but Shadow saw Sonic's ear twitch. "We can go now. " He put down the bag and hugged Sonic from behind. "I'm sorry you had to see that Sonic but we will get back your real brother. I promise," He said nuzzling Sonic's quills. "Only question now is how do we get back without being noticed?"

Sonic secretly adored when Shadow hugged him from behind like this, it always felt so right. “Well I guess we should chaos control to a location that’s not too far away from the castle but close enough that it won’t be a long run to get there.” Sonic went and picked up one of the chaos emerald’s and looked back at Shadow behind him. “I guess by the look of those guns that we are going to storm in then and take anyone out who gets in our way. If that is the case we might as well just chaos control ourselves to the castle and try to get Tails back straight away.”

"I don't want us to be noticed because in the confusion they could just very well kill Tails. No. We need to do this smart. Most of the guns have silencers so they won't really hear us when we shoot. This has to be quite," he said as he motioned his head to the side to press his cheek against Sonic's back. "How about we chaos control into the gardens. They're deserted. No one ever goes there. And we should be able to get into the castle pretty easy if we scale the wall and we'll be in my old bedroom. What do you think?"  He pulled back from Sonic and stepped around to look him in the face. He relaxed to see Sonic looked calmer. He was better and determined to get his brother back. Shadow smiled this would work. "While we are there you can look for Tails and I could look for Dooms eye. We can take out two birds with one stone"

A small smile appeared on Sonic's face "Sounds like a good plan to me, my only question is are you going to be using those guns on your own or do I need to use them too? Because I don't really know how to use them properly I normally just spin dash enemies when I see them" Sonic said admittedly slightly embarrassed at the situation they had. Sonic looked down at the chaos emerald I'm his hand,  he could feel the power from the emerald.

"I actually packed them for myself. I know you don't know how to use them and we really don’t really have the time to teach you. Your spin dash usually breaks their necks anyways or at least knocks them unconscious so I'm sure you'll be fine. One thing I do want you to have though is this," he said as he pulled a head set out of his pocket and attached it to Sonic's ear. He also gave him a watch. "The watch acts like a walkie talkie so you can always hear me and visa versa. This way we are always in contact." He smiled at Sonic before strapping up his weaponry. "Its time. Let's go." He pulled out his own chaos emerald. "Chaos control!!" He shouted and he and Sonic teleported into the deserted garden. "Remember Sonic, silently. Don't let your enemies see you or be able to call reinforcements. At least not until you have Tails OK?" He saw Sonic nod in the darkness of the night as they sped through the garden and up the wall in a quick and easy movement. They jumped into his bedroom which was also empty. Thank the heavens. He had no idea what he would do if they already raised the alarm. He was cautious when entering anyways looking for traps as they made their way towards the door.
